Jared Doherty is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist hailing from Kamloops, British Columbia. He is a key member of Kamloops bands At Mission Dolores, Mother Sun, and Elsewhere, and in his spare time Jared also writes and records his own solitary arrangements in the comfort of what is usually a bedroom.
Adopting a psych-pop songwriting style that simultaneously takes cues from 60’s/70’s folk rock (The Byrds, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell), more contemporary indie singer-songwriters (Mac DeMarco, Alex G), and with a touch of noisy experimentalism (Neutral Milk Hotel), Jared strives to create lush psychedelic soundscapes that breathe around his melodic songs.
Jared’s debut album ‘Small Window’ came out November 16, 2018 on Kamloops-based Factotum Cassettes & Oddities. The 7 track effort is a collection recorded at Jared’s home studio using an eclectic mix of digital and analog equipment, creating a distinctive, intimate sound. This, combined with a taste for imperfections and improvisation during tracking make the short album a unique and satisfying listen. Lyrically, the album deals with an exploration of perception; how viewing things through a small window can be equal parts rewarding and limiting, melancholic and uplifting.
Lyrics:stayed in one place too long forgot to keep moving get back from where you'd gone for days at a time half right, more than half wrong tried to choose dividing time between more things you could lose! overheard a thousand words they all sound the same heard a different way still tightly hanging on forgot to keep moving back down the worn out path to wear in your shoes eardrums ringing from yesterday's news wondering why you're stuck singing the blues! overheard a thousand words they all sound the same heard a different way not to complain
Lyrics:got my jar of flower petals screwed the lid on tight don't want the sunlight escaping gone to bed like it's going out of style steal an inch, force a smile shut your eyes and look around pay no mind to foreign sounds dig a hole deep in the ground I'll help you down while we're speaking of the devil keep your ears shut tight don't want the sunlight escaping a house built from expensive metal drawing from the well you had installed in the basement down your rabbit hole we go where's the surface? no one knows there's one more hole in the clouds where the sun's beating down but it won't reach underground i'm lucky that i brought my shovel dig up towards the light don't want the sunlight getting wasted i'd stand up but the ground's not level start rolling down the hill my mind is racing erasing
Lyrics:now keep flapping your arms until you're off the ground eyes wide drink in the sights and sounds you'd leave now but the skin of your teeth's got you hanging round I got too tired to pull on my thin disguise walk fast on the tightrope before it snaps in half i tried hard not to be pulled but it's calling me back hang low light in the breeze for an easy way out lie straight the birds overhead move the sky up and down call off the branch of a tree shake its leaves around hang low, light in the breeze that's an easy way out I got too tired to pull off my thin disguise wipe your eyes
Lyrics:the ship calling back toward the shore afraid that things aren't quite the same as before there's something wrong why is your face so long? the shore shouting to the ship we sunk a lot into this trip hope we don't fall in the water the ship returning to the shore tides aren't quite the same anymore bottom scraping shallow water the woods whisper to the trees realizing what this means remember all the things we had? said they would last right before they fell as leaves then the leaves line the forest floor preceded by the year before let them know what's in store
Lyrics:on your deathbed with a casual cancer here comes everyone in tow with words to say and things they know thought you had things straight then they turned around backwards if this is just the way things go keep walking in a figure eight made up my mind once or twice but could not leave the light on almost everything in sight is too blindingly bright i made up my mind once or twice but could not leave the light on almost every other time it had already been done
Lyrics:i'm with you now i hope it counts for all the times I disappeared mid-thought I'd tell you how things are supposed to go if i knew for sure i just don't anymore floating boats the lights in the sky took a break, got tired a bit outshone by the lights on the ground i will until i won't there's a hole in this boat but the wind is in our sails once again how can we fail? floating boats
