At first glance, you probably wouldn’t know that Fort Frances is an independent band.
Bands that do it all on their own aren’t typically the first to earn the praise of national radio outlets, prominent TV personalities and respected bloggers alike. They aren’t often the ones at the top of the “Bands You Need to Know Right Now” lists. You might not expect them to be turning heads at festivals across the country and earning comparisons to artists like Wilco, Ryan Adams and Modest Mouse.
But this trio from Chicago has managed to check all these to-dos off their list while remaining independent in every sense of the word. They produce their own records. They book their own shows. They write their own expectations. In an uncertain music business, the band is making sure that they can continue to make music with heart on their own terms.
Still, independence comes with a price tag. This sense of self-control can chip away at the most important element of any band: their ability to create. When the touring miles get longer and the business decisions get bigger, the songs somehow find their way into the backseat.
“Breathing Room” captures the band as they push pause and return their creative energy to the steering wheel. As the band continues work on a full-length for the spring of 2014, this is an early glimpse of where they’re going. One thing is clear, too: the three voices behind Fort Frances are exploring new territory - territory where the edges are a bit rougher than their polished indie-folk past, where the volume knobs are a bit higher, where the newfound space leaves room for songs that will continue to make Fort Frances stand out in a landscape that used to be reserved for bands with big budgets and big names standing behind them.
Lyrics:
Ive been waiting on fireworks The kind that make the heavens hurt Ive been counting up reasons to explode Oh oh oh my god When the future arrives, will we all applaud? Will we believe everything we saw? Or will our minds be blown? Into a million stars floating far above the earth In a new kind of universe The difference between space and time Is the product of the memories in your mind Add up all you ever learned, then divide By all that you have left behind All the closed doors Is the story of the starting of the third world war Dod wont pick sides, she wont keep score So we wont ask for more We wont settle for less, well pray for the best And dig a hole to the middle of the earth And find a new kind of universe Is tomorrow really so far from reach I can hear the engine humming I do believe That all these roads can turn to gold When the wheels slow down and your feet get cold Forget everything that youve ever been told About the way the world should unfold for you Tell me what will life be worth In a new kind of universe Tell me what will life be worth In a new kind of universe Tell me what will life be worth In a new kind of universe Point me to the spotlight Help me get the facts right All the pieces of this puzzle fit together like a mystery If the truth cant be found down here on earth Lets build a new kind of universeLyrics:
Take a second Take two Do a double take Let your brain unglue Tie the minutes up Like the laces on your shoes With a double knot To make sure you stay confused I been praying for good luck But the world dont seem to give a fuck About which way is up Or which was is down The rabbit hole Better known as your soul Ive been losing sleep Over what I cannot control My lord Theres always a little bit further to go Well I never Seem to keep it together I dream a lot about forever But at the end of the day I wake up wondering whether All my debts and my debtors Will ever read this letter About forgiving, forgetting and moving along They say you got to think fast In these fast times But the faster you move The sooner you fall in line And the harder it becomes To change your mind Your business Mind your step Mind your manners Take a breath Let it slow Now do your best To imagine a tomorrow where you can lay to rest All the worries about win or lose All the headlines of fake news All the walls we never managed to break through Take a second Take two Well I never Seem to keep it together I dream a lot about forever But at the end of the day I wake up wondering whether All my debts and my debtors Will ever read this letter About forgiving, forgetting and moving along If all I ever knew was wrong How do I know where to go from here?Lyrics:
Follow the light Coming in the window this morning Dont read the news Dont pick up the phone The ghosts in the stars Have been issuing warnings Of the trouble ahead In the great unknown We cant wait for love to figure out how to find us Among a million hearts standing in the crowd Life gets easily lost when youre looking for the answers Who knows where the world goes a thousand years from now Lets move north of the city And turn the radio on Listen to the dreams and the doubts and the reds and the blues Echoing among these highway songs We got to ready before the days get heavy Before one thousand years have come and gone We cant wait for love to figure out how to find us Among a million hearts standing in the crowd Life gets easily lost when youre looking for the answers Who knows where the world goes a thousand years from nowLyrics:
did your mother warn you about california the closer you get to the sea the more the earth shakes under your feet theres a fault line inside my brain runs parallel to the walk of fame all the stars line up one by one waiting to burn out beneath the sun put on your fancy shoes bite your lower lip and hum the blues may the western wind carry me and you when the whole world goes to hell send a message to all our friends if we never make it back again let them know we wish them well forward all our calls to this desert hotel we may feel ourselves sinking in the sand as history traces the palms of our hands time will tell truths that we cant understand so put your faith on high alert do you believe in heaven or do you believe in hollywood? all the billboards promised us something so good if jesus forgives and drugs can help us forget maybe the past meant nothing at all put on your fancy shoes bite your lower lip and hum the blues may the western wind carry me and you when the whole world goes to hell send a message to all our friends if we never make it back again let them know we wish them well forward all our calls to this desert hotel tell me where do you go when youre looking to forget the world and let it forget you you always seem to know how to read mind, where to find the time and what to leave behind put on your fancy shoes bite your lower lip and hum the blues may the western wind carry me and you when the whole world goes to hell send a message to all our friends if we never make it back again let them know we wish them well forward all our calls to this desert hotelLyrics:
You wont find the devil in the details Or in the fine print That makes your eyes squint He is listing his services for sale On the front page Of the modern age Stories of jesus christ and climate change, human rights and outer space There are wars That cannot be won The damage is done, the lines are drawn, the factories closed, the robots turned on Now every minute feels automatic All the headlines blur together, stock markets, the five day weather The forecast calls for truths to be told Before attention spans grow too cold To make it through the day, if you find history dont throw it away Let the past Stand inside the light Cause the devil is not hiding in the details You got to look him in the eyes And put up a fight Raise your hands, boys and girls If youre worried about the end of the world Turn your eyes from the tv screen that plays reruns of American dreams When did it get so hard to wake up? Im searching high and low for hope and truth that shine in the fantasy of youth No matter how the years may weigh us down Open your eyes, say a prayer for everyone and everywhere Now stare straight into the sun The big one aint here yet Our work is not doneLyrics:
theres another life in the atmosphere floating among the stars theres a universe where we are acrobats walking tightropes above our anxious hearts oh the possibilities of the galaxies where gravity is not a law have you ever stopped to watch your memories traveling at the speed of light? do you ever lose yourself dreaming of another life? have you ever stopped to watch your memories traveling at the speed of light? do you ever lose yourself dreaming of another life? theres another life under a hidden sea drifting between the shores theres a universe where time is invisible slipping through the cracks in the floor oh the possibilities of the galaxies where lines cannot be drawn have you ever stopped to watch your memories traveling at the speed of light? do you ever lose yourself dreaming of another life? have you ever stopped to watch your memories traveling at the speed of light? do you ever lose yourself dreaming of another life?Lyrics:
all the days smelled like gasoline my hands shook, the wheels spun, the light guided me to leave now the past is a novel that everyone wants to read so bury me in lies i dont need the truth i want to believe in the fantasy of youth our mothers and our fathers warned us of what was to come paychecks and prescription pills wont give you the keys to the kingdom but middle age is still a mystery, god only knows what i havent done so bury me in lies i dont want the truth i want to believe in the fantasy of youth i dont give a damn about where im going i dont give a damn about what i need i dont give a damn about where im going i just wanna live in the fantasy so bury me in lies i dont want the truth i want to believe in the fantasy of youthLyrics:
do you remember all the lies we told we were waging a war against growing old year after year after year, all the seasons disappear now im holding my dreams in my hands writing a script about being a modern man reality is the one thing i cant quite understand oh the highs and lows (2x) now think of all the secrets we cant share and all the truths scattered on the streets from here to there mile after mile after mile, we try to figure out whats worth our while half of life is spent running away the other half you try to find a place to stay are we in love or are we simply afraid of whats to come oh the highs and lowsLyrics:
I used to think I knew the answers Now I cant be quite so sure These billboards sell nothingness, from the highways they blow a kiss All the exit signs start to blur I want to get off, Im tired of trying And waking up in this ghost town dream I want to get off, Im tired of lying To this holy rolling, god fearing machine How many roads can one man follow, how many truths can one man swallow How many times can he sing the same sad song? How many lies will I believe before I finally see All I ever knew was wrong I used to wait, I used to count the hours I used to think that time would not pass me by But all the corners in all these towns among all these roads that circle around Are looking back at me as they wave goodbye Where to next, I need to understand Why tomorrow looks just like the day before Whats the world got left, I need to know Tell me what the hell the worlds got in store How many roads can one man follow, how many truths can one man swallow How many times can he sing the same sad song? How many lies will I believe before I finally see All I ever knew Can disappear And fall behind Maybe Im not here Im in another life All is quiet All is calm All Ive known Has all been wrong How many roads can one man follow, how many truths can one man swallow How many times can he sing the same sad song? How many lies will I believe before I finally see All I ever knew was wrong All I ever knew was wrongLyrics:
Take a look through the lens Our lives play at the wrong speeds Too quick to catch up with What they truly need Nobody really knows If we are moving Or if the light is reflecting an illusion We are stars in silent movies The crowd can see right through me They know every thought on my brain They know your heart is racing faster Looking for whats after The credits roll, the world goes insane Every day in history Were writing mysteries About where life will lead If I had the answers, Id tell you so Wander back through time Find your days inside a frame The distance makes it feel different The closeups look the same, Nobody even knows If we are even moving Or if the light is reflecting an illusion We are stars in silent movies The crowd can see right through me They know every thought on my brain They know your heart is racing faster Looking for whats after The credits roll, the world goes insane Every day in history Were writing mysteries About where life will lead If I had the answers, Id tell you so We are stars in silent movies The crowd can see right through me They know every thought on my brain They know your heart is racing faster Looking for whats after The credits roll, the world goes insane Every day in history Were writing mysteries About where life will lead If I had the answers, Id tell you soLyrics:
Forget philosophy Lets be the stars in a book no one will ever read With spaces too small and a plot too big To understand how we fit in, where we might land Time lives inside a burning house Oh, lets be anonymous Oh, we can hide, hide, hide, hide away From the worry, from the world Lets go underground Dont make a move, dont make a sound We can hide, hide, hide, hide away The borders of everything that I have ever seen Theyre blurring together, Theyre tilting a ladder toward the past Where the bad luck and the bad dreams cant last When you put them all behind you I hope this song will remind you Of a certain place and a certain time and a certain frame of your mind When your heart was made of second chances Dont confuse a memory of who you were with what youll be You will get out on your own You will forget the numbers that dial you home Oh, lets be anonymous Oh, we can hide, hide, hide, hide away From the worry, from the world Lets go underground Dont make a move, dont make a sound We can hide, hide, hide, hide away No one needs to know our No one needs to know our No one needs to know our nameLyrics:
You, youve been looking for a road Where you can wear someone elses shoes All of the minutes that we wasted Theyre on display in a museum booth We are moving through our lives The way the light moves through the morning Fading in and out of grey Disappearing without warning I, I am sending you the best of luck May the world be waking up Right by your side tonight Wherever you may be Send me a letter from somewhere I wont recognize Tell me tales of how you became a hero in paradise We are moving through our lives The way the light moves through the morning Fading in and out of grey Disappearing without warning I, I am sending you the best of luck May the world be waking up Right by your side tonight Wherever you may go youll find Something better than you left behind The past will always be a dear friend Even when you do your best to shed your skin Your mind takes pictures of everywhere youve been Everything thats lost can be found againLyrics:
I, Ive seen enough to write an ocean I, Ive gotten good at getting lonesome Youve gotten good at giving up on everyone When, when will I learn to turn my eyes off Why, why are you keeping all your clothes on Dont cover me up, dont cut me out, dont drag me in Im building, Im building, Im building a wall Im building, Im building, Im building a wall Keep me, keep me, keep me away from the shallow dreams That are stretching across moving screens With a soundtrack playing out of time There are no easy truths Theres only me and you With pictures of who we used to be in our veins Memories are not meant to be kept inside a frame I will drive out to the coast tonight, I will drive myself insane Im building, Im building, Im building a wall Im building, Im building, Im building a wall Inside the back of my mind Put me on your shoulders, we got a long way to climb Im building a wall in the back of my mindLyrics:
Lets find a light that wont turn out Love is a dream that lives out loud Carry me into the sun, carry me out of the atmosphere The days get heavy, the nights get thin Do you know the trouble Im in? The days get heavy, the nights get Lost in the middle of a busy, busy world Where all the signs point to the exits and the soundtrack plays in double Time stands still Everything Ive ever lost catches up with me The days get heavy, the nights get thin Do you know the trouble Im in? The days get heavy, the nights get lost Do you know the trouble Ive caused? Look at the shadows, look at the shadows That our souls are standing on Can you ride the waves, can you ride the waves And ride out the storm? Look at the shadows, look at the shadows That our souls are standing on Can you ride the waves, can you ride the waves And ride out the storm? The days get heavy, the nights get thin Do you know the trouble Im in? The days get heavy, the nights get lost Do you know the trouble Ive caused?Lyrics:

There is a time bomb In the shotgun seat with the dome light on Did you see the world eroding Did you hear the day exploding Into the night you thought had been forgotten But it's still inside the rearview Where you are holding on to everywhere you ever knew So let's lose our minds while the city is sleeping Let's lose count of the troubles we're keeping This is not a wake up call This is when you throw your fate against the wall Everything, everything is starting to make Everything, everything is starting to make sense It won't be long, it won't be long, it won't be long Before we find our way through the door There is a ghost town 100 years worth of falling down Where every room in every house Every word out of every mouth They warn you how to Keep your heartsteady when tomorrow glues itself to The past you thought you outgrew but everything lasts Now I can't stop my feet from shaking Now I can't stop the world from waking Up to find that I lost my mind Somewhere along the way Everything, everything is starting to make Everything, everything is starting to make sense It won't be long, it won't be long, it won't be long Before we find our way through the doorLyrics:
Packed in The lights low, well drive slow Away from here See the coast rise, feel the engine die Hear the phone disconnect This is not me waving goodbye This is me waiting for whats left I, I can see you running I can see you running out on me I, I dont wait for much at all Lay me down In my Sunday suit, these easy truths Spin me right back around See the waves break, feel your voice shake Watch the years pass too soon This is not me waving goodbye This is me begging for breathing room I, I can see you running I can see you running out on me I, I dont wait for much at allLyrics:
Late night when the city lights turn green Every intersection rolls over for me This is a gold rush in a land mine Dig down deep and you can find A heart racing in double time You can hear me crying Oh please take the wheel Im getting so far ahead of myself Oh please take the wheel Im getting so far ahead of myself I got a ghost inside my heart Shes got a flame inside her hands Till the medicine takes, till the earth shakes Till the day breaks, Till we put a stake in the sand This engine will be screaming out You can hear me crying Oh please take the wheel Im getting so far ahead of myself Oh please take the wheel Im getting so far ahead of myselfLyrics:
I need the summer With the sun inside my eyes Before Septembers here And the good things start to die I need the seasons of the year Changing right before me in your backyard So give me a flame Something to light a fire behind my name I want a hold inside my brain Something big enough to fit the world in I dont wanna be walking backwards I just wanna wake up inside The light years are turning on The light years are turning on This is not distance This is not scientific time This is not about the night stars in the northern sky That hang above your head That hang above your bed This is a call to keep things simple I know thats hard to do The days will only get as heavy As we ask them to We can break and we can bruise We can love and we can lose it all I dont wanna be walking backwards I just wanna wake up inside The light years are turning on The light years are turning on Ooh ooh ooh I dont wanna be walking backwards I just wanna wake up inside The light years are turning on The light years are turning onLyrics:
Were getting old enough to know how to sleep Through the headlines that made us grind our teeth But now I am afraid of all the places out of my reach Put me on a train now, push me anywhere These are the mountains moving These are the mountains moving These are the mountains moving I have been waiting with a time bomb in my eyes The minutes add up, but the days cant find out why Lets put our hearts in stitches, then well learn how to lie Everyone gets breakable Everyone gets breakable These are the mountains moving These are the mountains moving These are the mountains moving This is a heart thats losingLyrics:

You been sleeping You been leaving There is an army inside your bones Camouflaged in regret Aiming for a best guess Of what you cannot you know yet Of what you havent seen This year is yours Keep your feet busy Keep your head empty May your heart be long, long gone By the time the winter turns around By the time the arctic melts down You will be born anew Before these mountains move Theres a record spinning in the distance Over And over And over And over again This year is yours You been sleeping You been dreaming Can you feel the army in your bones It sings of love and sex And loneliness And faith and truth And absolutes Its holding time Who knows what for So wake with the light This year is yoursLyrics:
Slowly Ill turn Watch this sky burn I got more reasons than you will ever learn I should leave All this talk of traveling is rattling in my bones I been screaming all my secrets out in the microphone and Im looking for a way to quietly get you home Dont shake me Dont shake me Dont shake me down I made it to the coast but i forgot to call I been sleeping on the floor and climbing up the walls All this talk of traveling is driving me insane I got the ocean in my ears and I dont know why I came But Im all out of answers Dont shake me Dont shake me Dont shake me down All, all I saw I was standing at the door, this is the line I draw Between what Ive tried to save and what Ive already lost When you add it all up my dear The truth can be hard to hear You got the wrong man this timeLyrics:
Its a whisper on a wooden floor Tell me how do you gather dust so easy Its cold and ive been keeping score Now the autumns got me beat Now the autumns got me on my feet Gotta get in a routine and get myself clean Before the walls cave in tonight How did I learn to waste the day she asks Beneath the blue lights of this overpass The engine never turns, it only laughs I got a lot left in my pockets tonight Gotta get in a routine and get myself clean Before the walls cave in tonight Made a habit of losing everything Guess its time to make things right I hear the sirens ringing out The windows caving in with empty air The city is not dying The city has so much that it can share Count up miles, count up hearts We place our bets out on the in betweens Tell me what ill win now when my whole life is staring in a screen Some things are worth getting used to Some things are worth letting go Gotta get in a routine and get myself clean Before the walls cave in tonight Made a habit of losing everything Guess its time to make things rightLyrics:
Everything gets broken Everything turns golden The city keeps us waiting You can watch me folding The day into pieces big enough to break Some seasons I just cannot shake We are all working for something we hope we can save What I wouldnt give for a plastic heart That knows how to live faster than Ive ever learned Theres no shame in slowing down I bet your mother is proud Of how youve learned to turn this up Loud enough to drown the noise Of all the boys who broke your heart When you were just seventeen Staring at covers of magazines We are all dreaming of people we will never be What I wouldnt give for a plastic heart That knows how to live faster than Ive ever learned Theres no shame in slowing down You keep California underneath your Dress me in my sunday its Best if I dont say a word What I wouldnt give for a plastic heart That knows how to live faster than Ive ever learned Theres no shame in slowing downLyrics:
The bar is closing down On the north side of this nowhere town We wait softly as the world starts to move Traffic hums, the stoplights dim The morning after all your skin Tell me is it even love if you dont take it with you when you leave Everything's gone, everything's gone Everything's gone faster than we planned May the sun find, may the sun find May the sun find its way to where we stand A decade laid before my eyes Strangers pass the highway signs I dont need time, I need someone to take me home I traded in my travelling clothes for answers I learned years ago I drowned all my maps in a river of kerosene Chorus We are nothing more, we are nothing less Than skin and bones I know weve be warned Somedays are best left alone Our love is enough to cover cities in the dust Of all weve done wrong Come on lets give history something to sing about When were long goneLyrics:
Im locking all the doors now Im sending in the rent There aint much left to see here Dont ask where the answers went Or why I always feel so tired Why I look so out of sorts Everybody wants to know Everybody wants to know How everything will be easily left behind Watch your life play like a movie That wont make the big screen But youre every critics darling On the covers of magazines In the eyes of the war In the hands of history Chorus Behind, how everything will be easily left behind Everybody wants to know where Ive been x5Lyrics:
Theyre calling your name but nobody needs to know About the way we grow up and we let go Of all we need, gravity turns to a best friend I saw you falling down I saw you falling down for love Did you ever think wed make it? Tell me did you ever think wed make it this far? Remember the maps I stretched out on the kitchen floor I heard you ask whereve you been, who have you loved before These questions are nothing, by now we should know Yes we should Chorus When I saw you leaving, nothing in your eyes Theres someone out here who needs you And you turn your head and sigh When I saw you leaving, you never made a sound When I saw you falling down I saw you falling down x3Lyrics:
You wore your mother's smile and your velvet dress You wrote the past clean the day he left Everyone I know looks for love to feel young again I got a hard earned heart I got a hard earned heart Tell me can you take me in All the faces fading in between Out of back seat windows up on TV screens Everyone I know looks for love to feel young again Chorus Everywhere I turn, everything I burn All that I needed I know I cant have Breaking like the sun, sleeping like a gun Waiting to go off on my past If you know me now like you knew me then Tell me will you ever let me in For all the minds that I lost tonight I feel gone but I feel alright I got a hard earned heart I got a hard earned heartLyrics:
Meet me on the coast If you heart wont take me the tide surely will If the ocean runs dry We can sink to the bottom where the days stand still Come on, let me waste away Come on, let me waste away Thats no way to love x3 Meet me on the run If your heart wont take me the road surely will When the streets are all gone Theres a ride in my mind but my feet just stand still Chorus If the ocean runs dry And I swallow my word If the ocean runs dry Will you leave me behind Will you leave me, will you leave me Will you leave me behind Oh no thats no way to love someone who gives you what you need now x3 Oh no thats no way to love someoneLyrics:
I tried for years to reach you What will it take to teach you Everyone here needs someone to hold But tell me just how far in weve gotten ourselves darling Do hearts grow up or do hearts grow old? How did love cause this much trouble? Whatever may I do? When Im waking up just to see double Yes I am, Im losing you Leave me standing alone now If you cant pick up the phone how will I ever find a way through? But tell me just how far in weve gotten ourselves darling Will hearts grow up and forgive all they knew Chorus You should know You should know The sooner you leave, the sooner you goLyrics:
These years will pass now Memories turn into nobodys song I hope he treats you good I hope you found more than youre asking for I hope you found more than youre asking for These years will pass now People will change as they always do And I know Ill move along I hope I found more than Im asking for I hope I found more than Im asking for Ill take all I can And keep all I see Give me something I can lose Give me something I can leave I hope we found more x11Lyrics:
Tell me what it takes to remember Tell me what it takes to be good again Seven years running trying to find the ocean Now the wind whispers, take me home my friend These are the ghosts of California Voice drowning in the sea Its a good year for leaving Its a good year for you and me Build us a home made for heroes Build us a boat to find the stars Watch the hillsides burn, the saddest kind of sunset Now the tide is crying, now it cant escape these scars Chorus Tell me what it takes to remember Tell me, tell me what it takes to find our way Seven years running trying to find the ocean Now were standing on the shore without a word to say These are the ghosts of California Screaming songs that no one knows Its a good year for leaving Its a good year for letting go Its a good year for leaving Its a good year for letting goLyrics:
I have climbed rows of houses Waited nowhere, prayed for gold I cared for you the only way I learned how Loved you so hard that I had to let go I know everyone changes So I wont beg you to stay May you always know where youre going And may white roses line the way Remember the nights we stayed out until dawn Wasted and tired from our five dollar dreams We screamed at the cities, three stories below Singing take all you want and just leave our hearts clean Chorus Love be simple, time be kind Wherever youre going, keep me on your mind x2Lyrics:
You better know where youre headed Before you get too far Everybody wants to know where you are Everythings going faster than we planned May the sun find its way to where we stand
