Diggin Dirt

One Album

Diggin Dirt began planting its roots back in 2011 in the town of Arcata, CA in Humboldt County. The original lineup was a jammed out quintet that consisted of a double guitar rhythm section and a tenor saxophone. The original five (Rory Urquhart, Joey Incorvaia, Drew Weitzel, John Callahan and Aaron Gottesman) had high hopes of getting house party gigs and maybe one day performing on a stage. Practices, gigs and seasons passed as the band traveled through many incarnations of members and genres. The band took pieces from each chapter and kept moving forward, all the while staying anchored to the heavy groove element that Diggin Dirt has become known for.
In 2016, Diggin Dirt found its current form when it added a Humboldt local, the soul man, Zach Alder, and his commanding vocal element into the mix. The horn section also evolved when it rounded out its sound with the addition of Tyler Martin on baritone saxophone. The newly conglomerated 7-piece band had instant chemistry, and after only a few months of playing together, released their Full Season LP. Their debut album is comprised of 11 tracks that showcase musical influences ranging from afrobeat, reggae to rock, but always with an underlying theme of funky soul.
The band began touring in the spring of 2017 throughout California and Oregon, and was met with a tremendous response. A reputation of quality original music backed by high energy performance grew around the Dirt’s name, and in turn inspired them to keep growing. A byproduct of this growth is the recently released Bedrock EP. Showing more musical maturity and a new depth of identity, the album is a true sign of more to come.
The Dirt is more inspired than ever, and ready to bring the music to the people. With more expansive West Coast tour dates, and fresh material coming out of their preparations, the group shows no signs of slowing down as they expand their reach. Earn that paycheck, and dust off those dancing shoes because we’re looking at you tonight! Keep checking in on this funky force, and make sure to come out and groove when you happen to find them in your neck of the woods.

Alright Let’s get it, cmon, turn it up, California groove gumbo ladies and gentlemen, yeah, Let’s cook it up right now. Oh stir it up, i wanna get down. Ooo yeah Yes indeed ladies and gentlemen. You may have heard of the Memphis soul stew but today we are having California groove gumbo. Now we’ve been cookin it up for a while, and every time we dip, jive, boogaloo, and do what we do, someone says, “Hey man! What do you put in that funky stew?” Well i’m gonna tell you right now. Start off with 10 pounds of drum Alright, turn up the heat a little bit. And then, we need about 5 bushels of bass As round and as plump as you can find. Now you need 2 cups of that fine Humboldt county guitar. This is gonna taste good people Now we’re gonna spice it up with about 2 pinches of horn, give it to me Now this is starting to smell like a gumbo baby Now we have been travelin’ many miles. Searchin for that real down home roots funky profile. I’m not talkin about none of that metronome stuff. I’m talkin about real organic funk baby But if you want life, if you want a warm and wet place in which life may grow, them you’re gonna need oxygen. Give it to me, i need some room Oh alright just like that baby Now that was funky, that was good. I need some more. I need some more oxygen baby Oh yeah, can i get some love diggin dirt band? Lyrics:

Two years, twenty three long days Since my baby left me on my midnight train. Lord knows i’ve been tryin to do it right on my own. But I’m haunted with dreams of you, every night you’re gone. Help me Hold me again, never say we’re through, cuz i’m too far gone and I’m heartsick baby Thought i found love, love in you. Forty days, and forty nights. I’ve been wandering in a desert trying to find the light. Hold me again, never say we’re through, cuz i’m too far gone and i’m heartsick, I’m so in need of you.

Lyrics:

Left foot right foot step Feel your body, feel your soul. In times of disillusion, instead of worrying your mind away, just step. Yeah, step. When you see powerful people, leaving the rest without a say, just step. In times of trouble, left foot right foot, step. When all you’ve got is sorrow and rubble, just step. All the money goes unto the tax man. Step. Aint got nothin but pennies in your hand, just step. ??? Just Step… You see people down. Just step. Left foot, just step. Right foot, just step. Move away all your restriction… dance away all your restriction.

Lyrics:

I’m just a humble public servant man and I’m doing what I can to bring that fresh cream to the commonwealth in this land. We got two main cows, Bessey and Tilly, they had a mushroom patch and their milk got silly, but if you’re drinkin it it makes you wanna dance. So if you need cream. I’ve got it for ya my friend, all you need And that’s because, I’m your milkman. There ain’t so simple standard kind of cream we keep here among us, we’ve got our own culture of Funkacillus Groovidophilus, and Baby if you want it try it on out, keep that sweet cream movin south, and you just might want to get right up and hop with us. If you need cream. I’ve got it for ya. On demand All you need And That’s because, I’m your milkman. As a dairy man I do no harm, I milk my cows in the early morn’ and I sure do love Bessy and Tils. At 6:30 in the morning i sweat, i do so with no regret cuz i get all my kicks and all my protein pills So if you need cream, just leave out your milk can, all you need And that’s because, baby, I’m your funky milk man We’re gonna show you you how we do it now We’re gonna make funky-milk butter y’all Two steps, now git on down and do it with me Take a little squeeze from the utter (funky-milk butter) Stir it up for an hour (got that soul power) We got funky butter for your soul (funky milk butter) Take a lil bit. Stick it in your ear hole.(got that soul power) x2 We got it for you, oh you know what to do I’m your milk man and i’m bringin that funk home to you. Alright Bessy… start milkin’! Yeah!

Lyrics:

In the summertime, I would find you there, with your dark blue eyes, and your golden hair. You would speak to me, in a tongue so strange, always telling me lies, and playing your lovers game. Oh but in the end, I’ll lose ya just the same. Well then Winter came, roads, they froze into ice. I was alone on that mountain, but you never even thought twice. Sitting upon your throne, made of ivory and stone. Never once would you call me on my lonesome telephone. I was lost, and damn So alone. Where’d you go Well then spring time came, roads, they melted into clay. I came down from the mountain, but you’d already gone away. In the arms of another man, to the shores of another land. I’ll never hold your hands, or look into your eyes again. On that mountain all my love was spent.
